Compared with rivals such as the A4 Allroad and the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack, the Outback sets the bar in interior space. Soft-touch plastic marks the car's upper dash, and the door-panel and center armrests are cushy enough for extended resting. On our 200-mile real-world fuel-economy test route, the six-cylinder Outback impressed us with a run of 28 mpg-1 mpg better than its EPA highway rating. Those buyers with the budget to stretch to the pricier but conceptually similar Audi A4 Allroad will find that it offers similar power to Subaru's six with slightly better EPA fuel-economy ratings. While the six-cylinder is thirstier than its four-cylinder sibling, it's still relatively efficient when compared with its peers. What the Outback's four-cylinder engine lacks in acceleration it makes up for in fuel efficiency, according to the EPA. Comfortable and capable enough in day-to-day driving, the Outback suffers from less body roll than its high seating position would suggest. The Outback's ride and handling fare poorly compared with station wagons however, next to similar-size crossovers, the Subaru is competitively competent. At our test track, our 3.6R test vehicle needed 7.1 seconds to reach 60 mph the 2.5i needed 9.1 seconds. Both of the Outback's engines are of the horizontally opposed ("boxer") variety, a design also used by Porsche in the 718 Boxster and the 911. Subaru offers the Outback with two engine options and one difficult choice: go with the base 175-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder and suffer its lackadaisical performance, or shell out significantly more for one of the top two trim levels that give you access to the punchier 256-hp 3.6-liter six-cylinder. Dislikes: Poky acceleration times, clumsy in corners, lifeless steering. Likes: Comfortable ride, efficient engines, unique "boxer" engines. We'd spring for the bundle of options that includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a power rear liftgate, and turn-signals integrated into the exterior sideview mirrors. Our preferred Outback is the 2.5i Premium it represents the best value in the lineup as it comes with plenty of upscale features including heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Premium and Limited models now come with an auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass and HomeLink. Other changes are limited to a new overhead light above the center console, a standard 5.0-inch LCD readout in the gauge cluster, and two front USB ports. Subaru has made the previously optional EyeSight Driver Assist Technology package-which includes adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlamps-standard on all 2019 Outback models. An all-new Subaru Outback–with an optional turbocharged engine–will debut for the 2020 model year. All-wheel drive is standard-a hallmark of the Subaru brand-and helps the Outback earn its reputation as an outdoorsman's carryall. Safety takes the front seat in the Outback, though, and in addition to stellar crash-test results, Subaru provides a suite of driver-assistance features on every model. Subaru's signature horizontally opposed engines-a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a 3.6-liter six-cylinder-provide good fuel economy, but the Outback lacks the fun-to-drive nature we look for in a car. Subaru calls it an SUV, but the 2019 Subaru Outback is really a station wagon with ground clearance, and its capability as both a cargo hauler and an all-weather companion appeals to buyers with adventure on the mind. ![]()
